Dedicated Attorneys Helping Clients Combat Wrongful Termination
Getting fired is upsetting for numerous reasons. It can lead to financial insecurity, worries about the future and damage to your professional self-image. It is natural to take termination personally and to wonder what you might have done to deserve it.
While you cannot contest termination in most cases, you can take legal action if you know or suspect that your firing was based on illegal discrimination. At Pearman Law Firm, P.C., we protect the rights of workers who were wrongfully terminated based on their religious affiliations or other protected characteristics. If you believe you have a case, contact us to discuss your options in a free initial consultation.
A Brief Overview Of Colorado Employment Laws
Like much of the country, Colorado is an employment “at-will” state. This means that workers can quit for pretty much any reason without giving advance notice, and employers can fire workers for pretty much any reason (or for no reason at all) without advance notice. In fact, neither party is required to cite a reason for the severing of the employment relationship.
There are several important limitations to the freedom to terminate at will, however, including if the termination was based on illegal discrimination.
What Are Protected Characteristics?
Federal and state laws make it illegal to discriminate against employees or job candidates based on what are known as protected classes or protected characteristics. In Colorado, these include:
- Race or color
- Religion or creed
- National origin or ancestry
- Gender or gender identity
- Pregnancy
- Age
- Sexual orientation
- Disability (physical or mental)
- Marital status or marriage to a co-worker
- Veteran status
- Genetic information
- Citizenship (if cleared to work in the U.S.)
If you’ve been fired, your employer may not have stated a reason or may have given a reason other than discrimination. In either case, if you suspect that your termination was related to one of the characteristics listed above, you may have grounds for a wrongful termination lawsuit.
We Are Passionate About Protecting Religious Freedom
One of America’s founding principles was freedom of religion, and that principle is just as important today. Our firm’s founding attorney, Shaun Pearman, is a proud member of the Christian Legal Society and serves on the board of the organization’s Metro-Denver Chapter. We understand the importance of protecting the workplace rights of those who hold religious beliefs.
No matter what your religious affiliation may be, we are ready to help you seek justice and compensation if you were terminated for those beliefs or for seeking reasonable accommodations to abide by them. These claims can be difficult to prove, but our attorneys will carefully and thoroughly investigate your case and search for evidence that you (and perhaps other workers) faced illegal religious discrimination.
